A Women's Role

In the film Mulan, it shows a great difference between men and women from the beginning. Mulan, along with many other women, had to wear makeup and were seen to only carry roles of housekeeping and making their husband happy by being obedient and pretty. Once China is invaded and more men are needed at the front line, Mulan’s father was asked to serve even though he has an injury. When Mulan tries to stand up for him and let her voice be heard, she is looked down upon by her father and others. She then cuts her hair and learns the way of men and takes her father’s spot to fight for her country. By going to fight for her country, she has to hide who she is and become a man. In one scene, the other men are talking about how they want a pretty wife and how they want a wife to wait at home for them when they return home from war, meanwhile when Mulan explains women should be smart and kind, they brush off her comment. While training with men and going to fight with them, she gains their trust by becoming stronger and saving the Captain’s life. It all changes once they find out she is a female and automatically degrade her and leave her behind. Towards the end of the film, Mulan does not let these men bring her down and still tries to help fight her country. By killing off the Huns, she ends up not only gaining the Captain and other warriors' trust after saving China, she gains the emperor and countries' trust.

Growing up I have watched this movie many times and it has shown me how women can do anything. Women have always been seen less than men and not capable of doing a man’s job. This movie shows how not only can a woman do a man’s job, it shows how strong physically and mentally we are. By breaking the stereotype of always having to look pretty and not being able to contribute to help, it helps girls growing up realize they can do anything they put their mind to. Other Disney princess movies show how girls are pretty and delicate but this movie stands out the most. It is able to show a young audience how strong women are and how there should be no boundaries for women.
